"He's going to do everything he can to win his starting job back," cornerback D.J. Reed told ESPN. "He made that very clear."
But is that realistic?
The Jets made a very loud statement Wednesday with their quarterback shake-up, saying for the first time they're willing to live in a world without Wilson. From the moment they drafted him No. 2 overall in May 2021, he has been their everything. After 20 mostly unimpressive starts, he's now their third-stringer.

Coach Robert Saleh, whose strength is spinning negatives into positives, stated his intention to make sure Wilson gets on the field again this season. (Talk about a lukewarm vote of confidence for Mike White, the new QB1.) Barring injury, the only way that happens is if the Jets (6-4) fall out of playoff contention. If White keeps them in the race, why would they yank him?
In throwing a bone to Wilson, who ranks 35th in Total QBR (37.6) over the past two seasons, Saleh opened the door for a potential quarterback controversy. That, of course, is the microview of this big and complicated quarterback change. The macroview is, will the organization entrust the team to Wilson in 2023?
It's fair to wonder about the future even though Saleh cautioned reporters not to jump to conclusions.
"[I] just want to make sure you all listen to this carefully, please: Zach’s career here is not over," Saleh said. "I know that’s going to be the narrative. I know that’s what everybody wants to shout out, and that’s not even close to the case."

Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas are tied to Wilson, so they have a personal stake in his development. A lot of coaches and front-office types are afraid to admit mistakes and move on. Saleh and Douglas might not be that type, but we're going to find out in the offseason because there's a very big decision coming their way.
The Jets have a win-now defense, some intriguing parts on offense, and all they need is a good quarterback (not even a star quarterback) to make them legitimate contenders in 2023. Unless Wilson morphs into a productive starter over the final few weeks, it will be hard to run it back with him and him alone.
They can't draft another quarterback because that would be starting over, and this franchise has been there, done that with 2018 No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold and Wilson. No, the situation would scream for a veteran, someone like the San Francisco 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo, who will be a free agent. Saleh knows him from his days in San Francisco, and Garoppolo knows their offensive system.
The question is, could they keep Wilson and make a long-term commitment to Garoppolo or another top free agent? Do they pair Wilson with a middle-of-the-road quarterback -- i.e. a bridge situation? Only two years after trading Darnold to the Carolina Panthers after 38 starts with New York, which led to Wilson, Douglas could be faced with a myriad of options.
INDIANAPOLIS — Jalen Hurts waltzed into the end zone unscathed. The third-year quarterback threw his arms up into the air, pumped at his chest three times, and screamed toward the visitors’ sideline after recording his go-ahead 7-yard rushing touchdown with 1 minutes, 20 seconds left.
When the Eagles needed him most, Hurts bailed them out and got his team back on the winning track. His go-ahead score gave the Eagles a 17-16 road victory over the Colts on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Their latest victory created additional questions about various holes, but Hurts proved to be a dynamic and willing leader who escaped Indianapolis victorious. With seven regular-season games remaining, the Eagles possess the NFL’s best record (9-1), along with the NFC’s top seed, and first place in the NFC East.
Hurts’ report card
The offense wasn’t at its best, but Hurts delivered in crunch time.
He connected on necessary throws with accuracy and precision in the second half. Hurts completed 18 of 25 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown. After showing mechanical improvements from the pocket over the last two-plus months, Hurts also proved to be dynamic with his legs. He rushed 16 times for 86 yards, including his winning touchdown.
“There was never a doubt,” Hurts said. “There’s a lot of things we can learn from. Perfection is something that will never be caught, but why not chase the golden standard? It’s something we chase every day. ... [On the final drive,] we executed. Execution. That’s what clicked. We had positive plays, there weren’t any turnovers — that’s our formula as an offense.”
Sunday marked the team’s first game without tight end Dallas Goedert, who was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. Goedert’s presence was missed not only in the passing game, but also in the running game with his ability as a blocker. The Eagles will need to make more adjustments with Goedert slated to miss at least the next three games. Reserve tight ends Grant Calcaterra and Tyree Jackson both committed penalties during the first half.
Wide receiver DeVonta Smith paced the offense with six catches for 78 yards. A.J. Brown added five catches for 60 yards, while Quez Watkins caught both of his targets for 31 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown that sparked the fourth-quarter comeback.
Suh and Joseph debut
Just days after signing with the Eagles, defensive tackles Linval Joseph and Ndamukong Suh both appeared in their first game with their new team. Both players played during the opening drive, with Joseph earning a start in the team’s five-man defensive front. He acted as the nose tackle between Fletcher Cox and Javon Hargrave.
As expected, neither Joseph nor Suh received an abundance of snaps. Each player provided needed depth behind the starters, and Joseph and Suh combined for a sack against Colts quarterback Matt Ryan. Suh recorded three tackles while Joseph had four.
“It takes a couple games to get into 100 percent football shape,” Joseph said. “We have to keep going. It’s amazing that the two guys they added to the team got a sack; we’re just trying to give them a boost. That’s what we’re here for, to help the young guys and win games.”
The defense still had issues stopping the run early, but Jonathan Gannon’s unit made the necessary adjustments. Colts running back Jonathan Taylor recorded 49 of his 84 rushing yards during his team’s opening drive.
“They had a good first drive, a good plan,” linebacker T.J. Edwards said. “But we made our tweaks and got back to what we do, tackling well, making plays, and flying around. It’s all about the mindset: having faith in what we’re doing and playing with violence and attitude.”

The team's 27-17 win over the Packers arrived just in time.
"It felt good," Titans running back Derrick Henry said. "On a short week, we came in determined, paying attention to the little details and focused on getting better. We came into a great environment, a hostile environment, and we were able to get the win. We played a great game as a team."
Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill completed 22-of-27 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns in the contest, along with an interception.
Henry ran for a touchdown, and he also threw for another. He also went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season, thanks to 87 rushing yards against the Packers.
With the win, the Titans improved to 7-3.
"I'm proud of the way the guys came out and competed," Tannehill said. "We came in and wanted to be the more physical team, and I thought we were."
Titans head coach Mike Vrabel said the win "is indicative of who we are."
Rookie receiver Treylon Burks had a breakout game with the Titans, as he caught seven passes for 111 yards.
Tight end Austin Hooper caught a pair of touchdowns, including one from Henry.
Defensively, the Titans held the Packers to just 271 yards of offense, and 15 first downs.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 24-of-39 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns, but the Titans stopped the run, and got off the field at critical times. The Packers were 0-2 on fourth down.
"It feels great, to come to Lambeau and get a big W," Titans safety Kevin Byard said, "especially against a Hall of Fame quarterback."
The Titans took a 7-0 lead early on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Tannehill to running back Dontrell Hilliard, which capped an eight-play, 83-yard drive.
The Packers cut the lead to 7-6 on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers to Christian Watson, with Kristian Fulton defending. Denico Autry blocked the extra point attempt, and it was 7-6 Titans at the end of the first quarter.
The Titans dominated the second quarter, when they surged ahead.
After an 18-play drive was stopped inside the Green Bay five when Henry was stuffed on fourth-and-one, the Titans forced a three-and-out, and they got the ball back.
The Titans then put together an eight-play, 41-yard drive that was capped off with a four-yard run by Henry, which made it 14-6 Titans at the half. The Titans ran 27 offensive plays to Green Bay's six in the second quarter, as they dominated play.
The Packers cut the lead to 14-9 on a 39-yard field goal by kicker Mason Crosby at the 8:25 mark of the third quarter.
The Titans scored a touchdown on a little trickery on their next possession, as Henry threw a "jump pass" to Hooper for a three-yard touchdown. The score made it 20-9, as the extra point attempt by Josh Lambo was no good.
"When it got called in the huddle, I was like, "It's time," Hooper said. "Luckily it worked like it did in the walk-through."
The Packers responded, as they cut the lead to 20-17 on another touchdown pass from Rodgers to Watson, this one from eight yards, and a successful two-point try.
But the Titans just kept on coming, and Tannehill connected with Hooper for a 16-yard touchdown to cap off a five-play, 63-yard drive, to make it 27-17.
The Titans return to action on November 27 against the Bengals at Nissan Stadium

Disappointment at its peak as another game gets away from Packers
Once again, teams fails to build on anything good that happens
GREEN BAY – Defense gets a huge fourth-down stop near the goal line in a one-point game. Offense goes three-and-out.
Offense gets a touchdown and two-point conversion to pull within three points late in the third quarter. Defense gives up a 63-yard TD drive in five plays.
Defense gets an interception in the fourth quarter in a 10-point game. Offense goes three-and-out.
Special teams provides a 24-yard punt return across midfield with the deficit still just 10. Offense goes four-and-out.
That was the story of Thursday night's 27-17 loss to the Titans at Lambeau Field, and it has been pretty much the story of a 4-7 season.
When one phase of the Packers' game makes something happen, another phase experiences a letdown. Any surge is fleeting. Momentum temporary at best.
The moniker "complementary football" gets tossed around a lot, but the Packers can't get it to stick.
The Packers' defense did what it has done most of the year. It had an awful stretch of possessions – in this case three straight worth 20 Tennessee points – making its good moments not enough good.
The offense, meanwhile, had even more opportunities than it's had in several losses – not just possessions or chances, but true missed opportunities, especially down the stretch.
Sammy Watkins and Allen Lazard were wide open over the middle on back-to-back third downs in the fourth quarter, but Aaron Rodgers' throws were off target.
Rodgers refuses to make any excuses about his injured thumb, but he's said it hasn't really improved since the original injury in London six weeks ago, and TV cameras catch him shaking his throwing hand here and there.
"I've got to throw the ball better than I did tonight," he said.
He also was flagged for a costly intentional grounding near Green Bay's own goal line in the second quarter, helping give Tennessee great field position to score before halftime. And he took a sack in the fourth quarter after holding the ball for several seconds but never escaping the pocket.
The good from the offensive side? Randall Cobb returned from injury and led the team with six catches for 73 yards. Rookie receiver Christian Watson built on his three-TD performance in last Sunday's victory with two more scores.
Rodgers lauded the youngster's confidence and practice work of late, stating the obvious that the ball needs to find him more.

Aaron Rodgers was admittedly off in latest Packers loss: 'I threw a lot of kinda wobblers tonight'
As snow swirled through Lambeau Field, it's likely the Green Bay Packers' realistic playoff aspirations fluttered away, as well.
Amid an uncharacteristic autumn in Wisconsin, the latest unconventional chapter saw Aaron Rodgers miss badly on myriad throws and the Packers booed by cold and disenfranchised fans during Thursday night's 27-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
"Interesting," Rodgers said of the boos. "That's the best I can give you."
On the evening, Rodgers finished 24-of-39 passing for 227 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 94.7 rating. At a glance, it's hardly a bad night, but throughout the course of Green Bay's sixth loss in its last seven games, Rodgers misfired on passes he's long been right on the mark with. And on Thursday, he missed a few badly.
Rodgers admitted his play was sub-par, but wasn't certain to why it came to be, though he was quick not to place blame on the injured right thumb he's been nursing since Week 5.
"I couldn't tell you, point to one thing," the two-time reigning AP NFL Most Valuable Player said. "I'm not going to make excuses about my thumb, it's been the same since New York. I don't know. I gotta go back and look at it. It felt like fundamentally I was in a good spot. I just didn't have the same type of consistent grip and ball coming out the same way. I threw a lot of kinda wobblers tonight. There was some wind. I just missed a few throws I shoulda had."
With thoughts of a comeback still dancing through their heads trailing, 27-17, early in the fourth quarter, the Packers came away with no points over their final four possessions.
There was a three-and-out with two incompletions. Then there was another three-and-out that ended when Rodgers missed a wide-open Sammy Watkins on a crossing route by at least three yards on third down. Thereafter, the Packers turned it over on downs when Rodgers skied a ball 10 yards past Allen Lazard on fourth-and-3. Green Bay's final possession came up short on fourth again, this time with Aaron Jones getting stuffed for no gain on fourth-and-1.
This is not the Packers team anyone expected at the genesis of the season, and this not the Rodgers anyone has ever expected.
Coming off an overtime win against the Dallas Cowboys, there was merit to reason a turnaround could be ahead. Any thoughts of such a turnaround were grounded out by the Titans.
"I think last week showed us a lot, the possibilities," Rodgers said. "This week we didn't play as complimentary in all three phases."
Though it's still technically autumn, it's more than likely that the Packers are in the winter of their 2022 campaign. They're currently 10th in the NFC standings and have seemingly been searching all season long for their identity, for a rhythm, for anything to keep their expectations alive.
Rodgers is still a believer, but much like too many of his passes on Thursday, it seems those playoff hopes are wayward.
"We gotta play up to our potential," Rodgers said. "If we play up to our potential, we can win our last six games. I'm confident of that. Obviously I gotta play up to my potential; tonight wasn't it."
Tributes began pouring in on social media after Anthony “Rumble” Johnson died at the age of 38 following a long battle with illness.
MMA journalist Ariel Helwani confirmed the tragic news of Johnson’s passing.
“Horrible news: Anthony “Rumble” Johnson passed away today,” he tweeted.
“He was 38 years old. Johnson had been battling an illness for quite some time. One of the hardest hitters and most talented fighters in MMA history. Gone way too soon. May he rest in peace.”
Johnson’s manager Ali Abdelaziz tweeted hours ahead of Helwani’s confirmation, simply stating he was “heartbroken” by the passing.
In response to Helwani’s tweet, a user pointed out Johnson’s heartbreaking post from 2021 where he spoke about his scary illness.
“Really wish I could go into detail about how ill I truly am. Just know I need as many prayers as I can get and I’ll see you in 2022 God willing,” Johnson wrote.
“Never been this afraid of anything in my life but I’ve remained strong with the support of friends and family.”
Johnson’s cause of death was organ failure due to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.
Bellator president Scott Coker spoke in January with MMAJunkie about Johnson’s return timeline and how it would be dictated by his health battle.
“Without getting too much into his medical condition, he’s got to worry just about being healthy first,” Coker said.
“He’s got to heal up and get healthy because there’s so much more in life than just fighting. I want him to have a long, healthy life, and that’s the most important thing.”
Tributes poured in from all over the mixed martial arts world after news of Johnson’s passing with fighters left heartbroken.
“Rest Easy my brother. For a guy who struck fear in so many peoples heart Anthony Johnson was a caring person. From random text to check ins during loss. What a person he was, Rumble will be missed. Sometimes life doesn’t seem fair. Horrible news,” Cormier wrote.
UFC legend Michael Bisping wrote: “Utterly shocked and saddened by this. RIP. Sincere condolences to all his family and loved ones.”
Former UFC fighter Paige VanZant wrote: “RIP legend.”
Fighter Michael Chiesa wrote: “RIP Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. One of the most prolific KO artists our sport has ever seen. My prayers go out to his family and everyone affected by this tragedy.”
Referee John McCarthy wrote: “Crushed and devastated to learn that Anthony Johnson has passed away. AJ was one of the good guys, he was a great man with a huge heart. God Bless you AJ, I will miss you my brother. RIP Rumble.”
Johnson had two stints in the UFC, his first from 2007 to 2012 as a weltweight before he rejoined the promotion from 2014-2017 as a light heavyweight.
With dynamite in his hands Johnson defeated some star power with wins over Glover Teixeira, Alexander Gustafsson and Ryan Bader.
He earned two shots at the light heavyweight championship, both coming against Daniel Cormier where he lost via submission on both occasions.
Johnson’s final fight came at Bellator 258 where he knocked out Jose Augusto Azevedo Barros in the second round.
The win came in the quarterfinal stages of the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Grand Prix. He was however forced to withdraw from the tournament due to an unspecified illness.

Coming off a five-game losing streak, the Warriors considered this to be as close to a must-win game as possible this early in the season.
Curry finished the night with a game-high -- and season-high -- 47 points on 17-of-24 shooting, including 7-of-12 from 3, eight rebounds and eight assists. He scored 17 of his points in the fourth quarter. Curry is the first player to record such a stat line and have no turnovers since turnovers were first tracked in 1977-78, according to Elias.
"It was very Game 4 of the NBA Finals to me. He just wasn't going to allow us to lose," Draymond Green said. "Take that with a grain of salt because I'm not saying this game was as important. But you know when to get out of the way. It was one of those times where he was taking over."
Curry's dominance has been desperately needed by Golden State through the early portion of the season as they navigate defensive struggles and an unproductive bench. But Curry insists the weight he is carrying for his team is not a burden.
"We have to understand that (the young players) are all going to get an opportunity to perform, and there are going to be some struggles -- some real high highs, and some real low lows," Curry said. "That's the story of this team. As vets, you understand every year is a little different and you are ready for that challenge. For these young guys to try and find themselves in this league and also a specific role, it's challenging."
Curry has scored at least 30 points in eight of the 10 games he's played, becoming the third player in franchise history to do so alongside Wilt Chamberlain and Rick Berry.
So far, Curry has made 53 3-pointers this season, the second-most through a player's first 10 games of a season -- trailing only his record of 59 from the 2018-19 season.
"Steph was just breathtaking," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "He's obviously one of the greatest players of all time and he plays so well on so many nights. But this even seemed like something special for him."
"Steph was just breathtaking," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "He's obviously one of the greatest players of all time and he plays so well on so many nights. But this even seemed like something special for him."
"It was obviously necessary," Kerr said. "But it's not sustainable. So we know we can't do this for a long time."
The Warriors have needed to rely on their starters in almost every game this season, facing a major drop-off in production during their bench minutes.
Following their winless road trip, Kerr vowed to switch up his rotation to try and find a spark. He opted to move two-way player Anthony Lamb higher up into the rotation, as well as 2021 No. 7 overall pick Jonathan Kuminga, who was a DNP in three of the Warriors' last seven games.

Coming out of halftime Kerr moved Poole into the starting lineup over Kevon Looney to try and get Poole going, but it didn't work. Kerr also never returned to Kuminga in the second half and played Moses Moody for just nine minutes all night.
"We were not right in that first half after the good start. We lost our juice," Kerr said. "So the second half, it was more just figure it out ... we did enough to get it done, but at that point, we were just flying by the season of our pants."
Notable omissions from the rotation were lone veteran reserve JaMychal Green and 2020 No. 2 pick James Wiseman, who is back after missing 18 months with a meniscus injury and multiple setbacks.
Kerr said there will be opportunities for JaMychal Green and Wiseman to work their way back into the rotation at some point, but for the time being Kerr plans on playing smaller lineups that feature Draymond Green and Kuminga as the backup centers for Looney.
"It's imperative that (Wiseman) uses this time to improve," Draymond said. "If you're not in the lineup, you should be crushing yourself every single day. One thing for sure: Steve is going to call your number ... you have to make sure you're ready."

Amid 2-8 start, Darvin Ham vows turnaround coming for Lakers
SALT LAKE CITY -- An undermanned Los Angeles Lakers team dropped to 2-8 on the season with a 139-116 loss to the Utah Jazz on Monday. It was their third straight loss, all by 14 points or more.
And in each of those losses, L.A. looked progressively ineffective on the defensive end after showing some signs of life on that end at the outset of season.
Yet, as bleak as things might seem, ranked 14th out of 15 teams in the Western Conference through 10 games played, Lakers coach Darvin Ham vowed a turnaround is on the way.
"I would say this, man. And write it, quote it, however," Ham told reporters, beginning an impassioned diatribe about the state of the Lakers. "This may be happening now at the outset of what we're trying to force to be a culture change in terms of getting us back to being highly competitive on a highly consistent basis, but it's not going to always be like this.
"We're going to turn the corner. I didn't come here to lose. They didn't bring me here to lose."
With LeBron James sidelined because of discomfort in his left foot and L.A. down two other starters because of an illness (non-COVID) that's swept through the locker room in Lonnie Walker and Patrick Beverley, the upstart Jazz controlled the action from the start.

"There is a process involved where we have to go through tough times," Ham continued. "Like, I want to bottle this up. I want to embrace it. I want to have it and store it so when things are turned around and we get too comfortable and we start complaining about some problems that are not even necessarily problems -- problems that winning teams go through -- I want to be able to reflect on these times."

Without James, Anthony Davis led the Lakers with 29 points on 11-for-18 shooting, and Russell Westbrook went 8-for-14 for 22 points off the bench.
"It's like we just stopped communicating in the third quarter, stopped helping one another," Davis said. "We can't afford that."
And he lamented the state of the team.
"S---, 2-8 is a hard pill for me to swallow," Davis said. "Obviously, it can change around. I think New Orleans was 1-12 or something last year, come back and go on a run. We've got to put it together. Offense has found its rhythm. It seems like we've lost all our defensive intensity. And that's what's killing us."
Ham specifically said he was not aiming his postgame comments at Davis -- "That's not directed at AD," he said -- but remained steadfast in his optimism in the Lakers' situation.
"I don't want anyone around me with a defeatist mentality," Ham said. "I don't want anyone around me that's not competitive. I don't want anyone around me that's selfish. We got to be on the same page at all times, through the good, bad and indifferent. And that's all I can say about that. ...
"I've always seen the glass half full, regardless of the circumstance. And it's damn sure not going to stop now. We're going to push through this and we're going to be better for it."

Clippers pull off surprising rally to halt Cavs' 8-game win streak
LOS ANGELES -- After scoring while being fouled to give the LA Clippers an improbable lead with 37 seconds left to play against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Paul George let out a scream toward the home crowd.
George's three-point play completed a surprising 17-1 run by the Clippers that erased a 13-point deficit in the final five minutes to stun the Cavaliers 119-117 at Crypto.com Arena on Monday night.
The Clippers (6-5) snapped Cleveland's eight-game winning streak and handed the Cavs (8-2) just their second loss.
"This is our best win, our biggest win," said George, who had 26 points and five rebounds. "Overall, this was probably one of our better offensive nights, as well as our defense. They got elite scorers, elite shooting, and I thought we did a great job of just matching on both ends."
George's scream in the right corner of the baseline came near the same spot where he hit a game-winning shot to help the Clippers stave off an embarrassing loss to the rebuilding Houston Rockets a week ago. At that time, the Clippers were incredibly relieved to have beaten the Rockets, erasing a five-point deficit in the final 1:27 to halt what was then a four-game losing streak.
Monday night's fourth-quarter comeback, though, was much different. Instead of avoiding a bad loss to the Rockets, the Clippers willed themselves to a win over the hottest team in the league.
They pulled off several stirring come-from-behind victories last season. But the Clippers trailed by 10 points in the final three minutes against Cleveland and still won. They were previously 0-629 when trailing by 10 or more points in the final three minutes of regulation over the past 25 seasons, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
"I was surprised today," center Ivica Zubac said of the Clippers' latest comeback, because of the quality of opponent it came against and how Cleveland was playing. "But I guess that's what we do.
"This is going to be a big one for our confidence."
The Clippers have won four of their past five without the injured Kawhi Leonard (right knee), and they staved off the Cavs with John Wall sitting out the second game of a back-to-back.
Donovan Mitchell had 30 points for Cleveland, and Evan Mobley added 26 points and eight rebounds. But the Clippers played perhaps their best defense of the season, holding the Cavs to 0-for-7 shooting for a five-minute stretch.
The Clippers play the hallway rival Lakers on Wednesday for the second time this season. While the Clippers are not expected to have Leonard for a ninth straight game, they are hoping this Cleveland win can propel them to play the way many expected them to play when they started the season with championship expectations.
Coach Ty Lue said the Clippers are trending up and that he is starting to see them resemble who they were when they fought their way to the Western Conference finals in 2021.
"I think so," Lue said. "But it's going to be different again when Kawhi comes back. So you got to try to figure it out again.
"But I like where we're at. We're competing every single night."
A decided underdog, the Titans led for a good chunk of the game at Arrowhead Stadium.
But the Chiefs rallied to win 20-17 in overtime, and they snapped Tennessee's five-game winning streak in the process.
"It's very disappointing," Titans coach Mike Vrabel said. "I feel terrible for the players that compete, that put so much into this and play through pain, through discomfort, through any situation. I am lucky that I get to coach them – they fight.
"There's no moral victories, that's the thing I want to make clear. We came over here to win, and that's all we were thinking about doing."
The Titans led 17-9 late in the fourth quarter, but the Chiefs tied the game 17-17 with 2:58 left in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run by Patrick Mahomes, and then a two-point conversion run by Mahomes.
The Chiefs then took a 20-17 lead with a 28-yard field goal by kicker Harrison Butker with 4:04 left in overtime.
The Titans had a possession in overtime, but they couldn't do anything with the ball.

"We are just proud of how we played," Titans safety Kevin Byard said. "I don't know how many plays we played on defense – probably like 100 or something like that. We gave up a ton of yards, but we battled our asses off. We kept us in the game the majority of the game against an explosive offense.
"I told them when I walked to the sideline when they kicked the field goal – 'Hey, … I can't ask for nothing more. Everybody was out there battling. Guys were injured, giving everything they've got, and that's all I can ask for at the end of the day."
Malik Willis made his second career start for the Titans in place of an injured Ryan Tannehill.
Willis completed 5-of-16 passes in the contest for 80 yards, and he also ran for 40 yards on eight carries. Willis saw receivers let catchable deep balls escape their grasp in a game when he was sacked three times.
Running back Derrick Henry went over the 100-yard mark for the fifth straight game, this time finishing with 115 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
But the Titans dropped to 5-3 with the loss on a night when Mahomes completed 43-of-68 passes for 446 yards with a touchdown. Titans cornerback Roger McCreary picked off Mahomes in the contest.
"More than anything, I am proud of the guys for the way they fought," Willis said. "We didn't give up regardless of the situation, and I am super-proud of the guys. We didn't come out on top this time, but it's something to learn from."

The Titans were a resilient bunch on defense.
Early on, the defense rose up early after Kansas City put together a long drive to start the game, holding the Chiefs to a 24-yard field goal by Butker after they'd held the ball over eight minutes on a 15-play, 69-yard drive.
The Titans turned in an explosive play on their first offensive play – a 48-yard completion from Willis to rookie tight end Chig Okonkwo. But the drive stalled, and the Titans were forced to punt.
On Kansas City's next possession, Mahomes connected with Mecole Hardman for a seven-yard touchdown pass, which made it 9-0. The Titans appeared to be on the verge of getting another stop, but a missed tackle by McCreary on Hardman allowed him to score.
But the Titans answered back with a beautiful seven-play, 74-yard drive of their own, and capped it off with a four-yard touchdown run by Henry. Willis connected with tight end Austin Hooper on a 16-yard completion on the drive, and he also ran twice for 25 yards on the possession. Henry put the Titans inside the red zone on a 24-yard run.
When the Titans got the ball back, they scored again – on another touchdown run by Henry, this one from one-yard out. The five-play, 79-yard drive gave the Titans a 14-9 lead. The drive featured a 56-yard run by Henry, who broke Earl Campbell franchise record for rushing touchdowns with the 74th touchdown run of his career.
Early in the second half, the Titans extended their lead to 17-9 on a 44-yard field goal by kicker Randy Bullock. The field goal was set up by an interception by McCreary, who hauled in the Mahomes pass after it went off of Kelce's hands.
Jessica González, CEO of Free Press, which is part of the #StopToxicTwitter coalition, said she and leaders of more than 40 other groups met with Musk earlier this week.
"He promised to retain and enforce the election-integrity measures that were on Twitter's books before his takeover. With today's mass layoffs, it is clear that his actions betray his words," González said.
She said Musk was taking apart Twitter's investment in fact checking, moderators and policy, which could allow more dangerous disinformation to spread, especially so close to Election Day.
"Twitter was already a hellscape before Musk took over. His actions in the past week will only make it worse," González said.
Several major advertisers have suspended advertising on Twitter since Musk took over, including General Motors and Pfizer. Nearly all of Twitter's revenue comes from ads.
Employees sue Musk over lack of notice for firings
A handful of employees moved quickly to file a class action lawsuit in federal court in San Francisco on behalf of Twitter workers.
The case alleges that Twitter is letting go of staff without adequate notice, in violation of California and federal employment law. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification act, or WARN, requires at least a 60-day notice before conducting mass layoffs.
The company wouldn't comment on the exact number of staff let go and which departments lost the most, but an internal company email told employees to stay home Friday and wait for an email about the future of their jobs.
Employees posted about getting laid off on Twitter under the hashtag #LoveWhereYouWorked.
They expressed gratitude to their teams and bosses, grieved for the company culture they enjoyed, and worried about colleagues who might lose health insurance or work visas.
Other users chimed in, calling Twitter employees "government stooges" and criticizing content moderation and policy decisions under the company's previous leadership.
Musk has long complained about the size of Twitter's staff, which was about 7,500. The company had ballooned in recent years, even as it struggled financially.
Musk fired many of Twitter's top executives last week, including its CEO, chief financial officer and top lawyers. He also dissolved its board.

Every year, Mexicans gather in cemeteries to remember their departed family members, in a celebration that is the country’s most important fiesta. According to tradition, the heavens open, and the souls of the dead come back to earth.
Here is everything you need to know about the Day of the Dead:
What is the Day of the Dead?
It is not just one day. In fact, it’s a two-day celebration that is traditionally observed on November 1 and 2, where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drinks and even toys at altars, all of which serve to entice the souls on holiday to visit.
It is marked as a celebration rather than a sombre affair, a time when the living and the dead are believed to connect.
“This is a celebration. The sadness is there when our relatives died, but during this day, we have to show them that we remember them with happiness,” Yoroslay Delgado told Al Jazeera.

“We dance, we sing – they need to feel they are welcome.”
The festivities could also start on October 28, depending on the location, and some places observe the day on November 6.
Who celebrates the Day of the Dead?
It is a national holiday in Mexico, but it is also celebrated throughout Latin America, Spain, the Philippines and parts of the United States.
How did the celebration originate?
The celebration is believed to be a pre-Hispanic tradition that came from Indigenous communities dating back thousands of years.
For the Aztecs, death was transitory, and souls could come back and visit. According to some analysts, after the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, those traditions were melded into the Catholic calendar and are now celebrated to coincide with All Souls’ Day.
How is the day celebrated?
In many parts of Mexico, families will spend November 1 remembering the children, often referred to as “angelitos” (little angels), decorating their gravesites with toys and balloons. On November 2, they will celebrate All Souls day, dedicated to adults who have died.
Families create “ofrendas” (altars) on the graves of their loved ones. They also use cempasuchil flowers (marigolds), as these are believed to help lead spirits back from the cemetery to their family’s homes.

Others write short, satirical poems, also known as “calaveras” (skulls), which are epitaphs of friends that describe their interesting habits and are peppered with funny anecdotes.
The skull, which represents the cyclicity of life, is a predominant symbol of the day. Sugar or chocolate skulls can be given as gifts to both the living and the dead. Also popular is pan de muerto, a bread made in different shapes, often decorated with white frosting to represent the image of twisted bones.
How are the altars (ofrendas) built?
The altars are an important element during the celebration as they show the souls the way home, while they also include elements that honour and please the departed.
The altars usually include photos of the visitors. They can have two levels to symbolise heaven and earth, a third level to represent purgatory or seven levels to the steps to go to heaven.
The altars include a representation of the four elements. Water is meant to satisfy the thirst of those visiting; fire burning in candles whose light guides the deceased’s spirit; earth is present in food and other items that are special for the dead; and air is represented by colourful paper cut into designs .
Some altars include salt, which is believed to help those departing during the afterlife journey.

While Halloween is widely known and celebrated all over the world, it is by no means the only festival taking place at this time of year.
Thanks in part to its eye-catching face painting and costumes, awareness of the Day of the Dead has soared in recent years – and it’s far more than simply a “Mexican Halloween”.
As a Google marks the festival with a special commemorative Doodle in the UK, USA, Mexico and beyond, here’s everything you need to know about the Day of the Dead.
Celebrated as a “typical Aussie”, the iconic Australian country music singer has today been celebrated by Google’s doodle.
Slim Dusty was an Australian country music singer songwriter who recorded over his career released more than 100 albums and has sold over seven million copies of those during a career spanning nearly 70 years. Google wrote “Today’s Doodle celebrates the Australian icon being awarded the Outstanding Achievement award at the ARIA music awards in 2000.”
David (Slim Dustry) Kirkpatrick was born in the town of Kempsey, New South Wales, located about 400 kilometres north of the Sydney CBD and 400 kilometres south of the Brisbane CBD and was raised on his family farm in nearby Nulla Nulla Creek.
As a young boy he dreamed of being a country singer and at the ripe old age of 10, he wrote his very first song called, “The Way the Cowboy Dies”, and at only 11, Then David, decided his future name was to be “Slim Dusty”, which he thought was better suited to a country singing cowboy.
Slim Dusty went onto be the first ever singer to have his voice sent to earth from space when astronauts in the spaceship Columbia beamed Slim’s voice singing “Waltzing Matilda” back to earth as they orbited over Australia which is the song he sang to close the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.
He also went onto win multiple Gold and Platinum record awards and 38 Golden Guitars (which is the highest awards given to country musicians). Amongst his other plethora of awards, including becoming A National Treasure which is voted by the Australian public, Slim was amongst the first to be inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame.
In tribute to Slim, The Royal Australian Mint minted a coin to celebrate his decorated life and in 2015 in his hometown of Kempsey, the Slim Dusty Centre and Museum was opened.

His daughter Anne Kirkpatrick, assisted Goggle with their project to celebrate the icon and said that, “
He was happiest on the road touring with his band, collecting, writing and recording great songs and, in his downtime, going fishing!”
Adding that “Slim Dusty was my dad, and while I shared much of him with Australia and thousands around the world, we wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

Today’s Google Doodle honours Slim Dusty, the original Slim before ‘Slim Shady’ who is considered the “father of Australian country music” - but who is Slim Dusty, and why is he so famous? Here’s everything you should know about the Aussie legend.
Today’s Google Doodle commemorates the late but ever-great Australian country singer Slim Dusty. David Gordon Kirkpatrick (Slim Dusty) was born in Kempsey in New South Wales in Australia on June 13, 1927 and he went on to become an icon in the country music scene.
He released his first song entitled “The Way the Cowboy Dies” when he was only 10 years old back in 1937 which set the foundation for a long and successful career in music - he later adopted ‘Slim Dusty’ since it felt more apt for the singing cowboy aesthetic.
Who is Slim Dusty?
Referred to as a “typical Aussie” by many, Slim Dusty is the Australian country music singer that has been celebrated in a Google Doodle today. Born in northern New South Wales in the coastal town of Kempsey in 1937, he was raised on a dairy farm in Nulla Nulla Creek as the son of a cattle farmer.
As a country music singer, Slim Dusty’s appeal lay within his talent for storytelling in song - he boasted a huge repertoire of Australian “bush ballads” such as ‘G’Day G’day, Duncan’ and ‘A Pub With No Beer’ which was his best selling record.
What is Slim Dusty’s real name?
Slim Dusty’s original name is David Gordon Kirkpatrick. He later updated it to Slim Dusty as his stage name at age 11 after he released his very first cowboy track ‘The Way the Cowboy Dies’ just one year before.
Why is Slim Dusty famous?
“It’s a long way from Nulla Creek to be walking out with your guitar and singing ‘Waltzing Matilda’ at the closing ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.”
These were the words of Slim Dusty’s daughter Anne Kirkpatrick, referring to the journey Slim made from his humble farm origins to being a world-famous artist over his 76 years. In his career Slim recorded over one hundred albums, sold over seven million albums and won 38 Golden Guitar country music awards.
He was also inducted to the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1988 and has a coin pressed in his honour by the Royal Australian Mint. The awards didn’t stop there, however, as he also was recognised as father of the year, senior Australian of the year, artist of the decade, the Australia Council’s achiever of the year and he became an Officer of the Order in Australia in 1998.
Aside from this prestige, his iconic style also garnered him attention and he wore his iconic cowboy hat even when he met Queen Elizabeth II in Brisbane in 1992. "He was granted permission to keep his hat on, as acknowledgement of how much the hat was a part of Slim Dusty," the Slim Dusty Centre said.
When did Slim Dusty die?
Slim Dusty died of Kidney cancer at the age of 76 on September 19, 2003. It was said that he peacefully passed away at his Sydney home accompanied by his wife Joy, son David and daughter Anne at his bedside. In his honour a state funeral was held to celebrate his legacy which was attended by Australian leaders including Prime Minister John Howard, opposition leader Simon Crean and Queensland premier Peter Beattie.
In Slim’s later years, he wrote on the front cover of a book of Henry Lawson poems he called his Bible of the Bush that was gifted to him by his wife, “All my dreams and ambitions are basically fulfilled”. His daughter said: “That was the dream of an 11-year-old kid to become Slim Dusty, a kid of immense raw talent and drive who met a kindred spirit in my mother. Together they made his dream come true. Our family is immensely proud of what he achieved.”

Slim Dusty’s Life and Career Celebrated With Google Doodle
Slim Dusty is getting the Google Doodle treatment.
The late country great today (Oct. 24) features on Google’s homepage, a cartoon image of the Aussie singer, songwriter and guitarist switching out the search engine’s logo around the globe until midnight.
Born David Kirkpatrick in Kempsey, NSW, and raised on his family farm in nearby Nulla Nulla Creek, Slim got started in music early.
He penned his first song, “The Way the Cowboy Dies”, at the age of 10, and the following year, decided on “Slim Dusty,” a stage name “much better suited to a singing cowboy,” reads a statement from Google.
His signature song, 1957’s “The Pub With No Beer,” written by his mate, Gordon Parsons, was a top 10 hit in the U.K., peaking at No. 3 in 1959, and is said to be the first gold-certified record in Australia.
The prolific artist recorded over 100 albums, sold over 7 million albums, and has won 38 Golden Guitar country music awards.
He was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame in 1988, during the inaugural ceremony, and had a coin pressed in his honour by the Royal Australian Mint.
Awards poured in during his lifetime. He was appointed father of the year; senior Australian of the year; artist of the decade; the Australia Council’s achiever of the year, and made an Officer of the Order in Australia in 1998.
Dusty has also been the subject of a feature film, 1984’s The Slim Dusty Movie, the Slim Dusty Centre and Museum in Kempsey opened its doors to the public in 2015, and, in 2020, the Universal Pictures documentary Slim & I arrived, a feature-length retelling of Joy McKean’s decades-long partnership with Slim.
“It’s a long way from Nulla Creek to be walking out with your guitar and singing ‘Waltzing Matilda’ at the closing ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics,” comments Slim’s daughter Anne Kirkpatrick.
“The list of awards and accolades is astonishing enough, however, perhaps more importantly, I saw how Slim Dusty and his music became woven into the fabric of people’s lives. His music lives on.”
She continues, “He was happiest on the road touring with his band, collecting, writing and recording great songs and, in his downtime, going fishing.”
Dusty died Sept. 19, 2003 at the age of 76, following a two-year battle with cancer.
Dusty is the latest in a line of influential and inspirational artists recognised with a “Doodle,” a list that includes late EDM star Avicii (Tim Bergling), late Cuban star Celia Cruz, classical music singer and actress Begum Akhtar, and Beatles co-founder John Lennon.
On the other hand, this felt like an introductory of sorts, where Dak Prescott was introduced to his new and (definitely) improved football team.
Sure, this is Dak's seventh year with the Cowboys. But never, and let's add a couple of "ever and evers" to that, has he played with a defense like this.
In Week 1 against the Buccaneers, the Dallas defense wasn't this good. And at no point in Dak's career has he played with a defense that has the ability to just dominate like this.
OK, I get it. The Lions aren't exactly ... the Eagles, the team that took it to the Cowboys last week. The Lions aren't really any of the high-powered offenses in the league.
Still, they're good enough to get more than two field goals. They're a good enough team that they should be able to give opponents some problems throughout the game. But it didn't happen because the Cowboys rose to the challenge – one they presented to themselves after the way they played against Philadelphia last Sunday.
Let's be honest, it had to be something astronomical to overtake Dak's return as the storyline of the game, but that's what happened. That's how good this Cowboys defense played on Sunday against a Lions offense that entered the day scoring 30 more points than the Cowboys (140-110). Technically, Detroit has still outscored the Cowboys this year, but if this game proves anything, it's that stat doesn't really matter at all.

The Lions are 1-5 because they really have problems on defense. The Cowboys are 5-2 because they are a problem on defense, evident Sunday by its ability to take over a game in the second half.
Five turnovers after halftime, including a crucial fumble recovery at the 1-yard line when it appeared the Lions were about to take the lead. While that play might be more in the "fortunate" category, it's still making a play on the goal line, creating a force that caused a fumble and then Anthony Barr's alert recovery.
After that, the turnovers were all about making plays and/or pressure applied. Trevon Diggs is one of the best receivers on this team, and just happens to play cornerback. He did it again Sunday with a play on the ball that most corners don't have the ability to make. Also, Jourdan Lewis got a pick because of the pressure Micah Parsons gave off the edge.
And let's talk about Mr. Parsons. This dude clearly was upset with the way last week's game ended against the Eagles. Of course, he would be. The Cowboys had a shot to get off the field and perhaps steal a win in Philly, but the defense couldn't get that necessary stop.
Frustration was at an all-time high, especially with Parsons. But even when things didn't get off to a great start on Sunday, it never felt like the defensive players tried to press and do too much. Even playing within themselves, they still made huge plays.
None bigger was the one Parsons made by chasing down tight end Brock Wright at the 1-yard line, setting up a fumble on the next play.
That's the kind of play that makes Parsons – in my mind – the best defensive player in football because he has the ability to dominate on so many different levels.
And that's what made this game interesting. It's a team that Dak Prescott isn't really used to. OK, he's had a front-row seat for the last few games with Cooper Rush filling in at quarterback. Dak knew the defense was carrying the team through the four-game winning streak.

But it's one thing to be on the sideline and another to be in the middle of it. This is something that he's going to get used to – maybe he figured it out in the second half of this game.
There will be some games where three points in the first half is going to be a problem. But more often than not, with this defense, the game will still be reachable even after a half like that.
That style of football will put more emphasis on running the ball, throwing it away when there's pressure, maybe punting instead of going for it or kicking long field goals.
Again, it's a style we've seen for a month. It's a style that is new to Dak.
Trust me, there will be plenty of games that are tougher than this one. Not saying that Dak returning and scoring some second-half touchdowns is a cure to everything.
But I bet it's safe to assume he's going to play better. The rust will be shaken off by next week and this offense will continue to jell. In the meantime, they can lean on this defense, something Dak hasn't been able to do on a consistent level throughout his career.
He did on this day. And he'll likely be able to moving forward.
And it doesn't matter how many years he's been in the league or how many millions are in his contract. This is the new Cowboys and there's nothing wrong with embracing it.
A below-par Liverpool, seeking a third consecutive league win, could have few complaints as Forest produced a superb performance to earn their second win of the season.Jurgen Klopp's side were off the pace in the first half as a disciplined Forest side knocked them out of their rhythm.
Forest went ahead in the 55th minute when Awoniyi poached a rebound after his initial effort struck the post.
The hosts were dangerous on the counter-attack and had several chances to give themselves some breathing space.
But they were indebted to keeper Dean Henderson, who made a series of saves, the best coming in stoppage time when he somehow kept out a sensational Virgil van Dijk close-range header from a corner.
Forest held on and moved to 19th place with nine points from 12 games, one ahead of Leicester City. Meanwhile, Liverpool remain without an away win and sit in seventh place.
After a poor start to the season Klopp's side had built up some momentum with last weekend's stormy win over champions Manchester City and followed that up by beating West Ham United in midweek.

Even with several injuries they were expected to roll over a Forest side finding life tough back in the elite.
But Steve Cooper's side were magnificent as they gained a result that could kickstart their season.
"It has to be a turning point. If we can beat Liverpool, we can beat anyone," Forest's Ryan Yates said.
Liverpool struggled to break down Forest's defensive ranks in the first half with Mohamed Salah failing to connect properly with one chance and Van Dijk squandering a headed opportunity.
Forest were compact and a threat on the counter attack with Jesse Lingard shooting straight at Alisson from one break.
Awoniyi was a thorn in Liverpool's side throughout and Forest's goal stemmed from a free kick conceded on the powerful forward by Joe Gomez on the halfway line.
The ball was launched diagonally towards Steve Cook who drilled in a low cross towards Awoniyi who shinned his first effort against the post before steering home the rebound.
Harvey Elliott forced Henderson into a save almost immediately but Forest could have made it 2-0 on the counter-attack when Morgan Gibbs White was denied by a superb sliding block by James Milner while Brennan Johnson also went close.

Harvey Elliott forced Henderson into a save almost immediately but Forest could have made it 2-0 on the counter-attack when Morgan Gibbs White was denied by a superb sliding block by James Milner while Brennan Johnson also went close.
Henderson was forced into action again to deny Trent Alexander-Arnold from close range and the goalkeeper was to produce more heroics as the minutes ticked down.
Liverpool laid siege to the Forest goal late on with Van Dijk volleying wide and then seeing his header superbly saved by Henderson.
"This is a big win but only a win. We've got to build on that and carry on," Forest boss Cooper said.
"To win a game against someone like Liverpool, you need to have very good moments at both ends. We've done that today."
Nottingham Forest vs. Liverpool result: Klopp's men still winless away as Awoniyi haunts former club
THE CITY GROUND, NOTTINGHAM — Liverpool’s winless run on the road now stands at five Premier League games, after falling to a 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest.
The day began at 05:15 for Jurgen Klopp, with Thiago Alcantara reporting an ear infection which caused him to sit this one out, while Darwin Nunez failed a late fitness test. The huge injury list combined with a spot of rotation meant Liverpool were missing three of their four best attackers, the same figure in midfield, and three of their five strongest defenders.
However, they were in relatively high spirits, having picked up back-to-back wins against Manchester City and West Ham United in the last week. The absentees told, though, with a frustrating performance in which there was a real dearth of quality chances.
Forest — who were rooted to the foot of the table and without a victory in nine — were the better side in the first half. Liverpool dominated possession, but the intensity was completely lacking, while the East Midlands club were predictably up for it, biting into every challenge with ferocity and creating solid chances on the break.
Morgan Gibbs-White showed his class, turning on the style with balls flicked round the corner and hunting for the killer through ball. He combined that with constant chasing, always on the case of the Liverpool back seven, while breaking forward with energy on the counter. On the opposite flank, the often-maligned Serge Aurier had a similarly impressive performance dealing with Fabio Carvalho.
Liverpool kicked off the second period with a much-needed spring in their step, but that was soon halted by Taiwo Awoniyi. The man who bundled home the winner in Forest’s only other win this term — against West Ham United here in August — repeated the trick, this time haunting his former club. The 25-year-old was shipped out on seven loan moves during his time at Liverpool, for whom he never made a senior appearance.
The Nigerian striker initially found himself hauled down cynically on the halfway line by Joe Gomez, just as he looked to have found a free run towards goal. From the resulting free-kick, the ball made its way to the left flank, put in low to Awoniyi, whose first stab hit the post. But the rebound fell kindly for the No.9, who made no mistake on the second attempt.
The man who eventually replaced Awoniyi, the harrying presence of Brennan Johnson had a chance to wrap up the game after Gibbs-White and Cheikhou Kouyate — impressive in central midfield throughout — combined to burst down the left and play in the striker. Alisson denied him well, as he did for Ryan Yates later in proceedings.
Yet while LeBron James bluntly lamented his team's lack of "lasers" on the roster after the Warriors game, he did not add to that refrain Thursday, even after the Lakers went 0-for-9 on 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
"I'm definitely not going to sit here and harp on what we can't do every single game," James said when asked about his team's mounting misses. "That's not a leader. What I know we can do? We can defend our ass off. We did that tonight, which gave us an opportunity to win and we just couldn't make it happen. But, I'm OK with that."
The Lakers held the Clippers -- one of the oddsmakers' favorites to win the NBA title -- to just 103 points and 80 total shots, with the Lakers' on-ball pressure helping force the Clippers into 22 turnovers.
James assured reporters that L.A.'s shooting would improve but added that it will not be the winning formula the team leans on.
"If we're reliant on [sufficient outside shooting] every single game, then we're in trouble," James said. "So I'm not worried about that or thinking about that. It's how hard we play, how aggressive we play, how determined we are to go out and compete every night. And we got to defend. When we defend, we're going to give ourselves a good chance to win."

There was an acknowledgement throughout the team that the Lakers shot themselves in the foot by being so off, but they cannot shy away from open looks.
"Don't let missed shots take away your confidence," said Anthony Davis, who was 2-for-4 from 3 while the rest of L.A.'s starters were 5-for-29. "Keep shooting it, be confident in your shot. And they're going to fall. Ain't nothing you can do but keep shooting."
Coach Darvin Ham said the Lakers' analytics department determined the team had more quality shot attempts by their metrics than any of the other three teams that played on opening night, adding to his belief that they are the shots his team is supposed to take.
Ham was asked after the game whether the shots might be open because opposing defenses are packing the lane to cut off driving opportunities and daring the Lakers to shoot.
"I guess you could say that," Ham said. "But, I mean, we just have to take care of our business. That's the way that we want to play. If they want to give us those shots, then we'll accept it wholeheartedly. I mean, that's the way we want to play. We want to play fast, physical and free.
"And, again, we see these guys making shots in practice and shootaround. They got to do it on the game floor. It's as simple as that."
Lakers guard Russell Westbrook had a particularly difficult shooting night Thursday, going 0-for-11 overall (including 0-for-6 from 3), but even his night was defended by James.

"Just flush it down the toilet and get ready for Sunday," James said, when asked whether he had any advice for Westbrook. "He's a veteran. We've all had bad shooting nights. I've had bad shooting nights. Everybody in this league has had bad shooting nights. Who cares? I thought he played a great game. Defensively he was in tune. He was locked in. He pushed the tempo. He just didn't make any shots, and that's OK."
Westbrook, who finished with five steals, four assists and just one turnover aside from the missed shots, also looked ahead to the next game against the Portland Trail Blazers when asked to assess his performance.
"Solid," he said of his night. "Played hard. All you can ask for. Go on to the next one."
Kawhi Leonard off bench in LA Clippers' win over Lakers
LOS ANGELES -- After missing all of last season, Kawhi Leonard opted to wait a little longer before making his much-anticipated return for the LA Clippers.
For the first time with the team, Leonard decided not to start, looking to maximize his limited minutes. He ended up finishing the game as the Clippers beat the Los Angeles Lakers once again. Leonard scored 14 points, including a 21-foot jumper with 52.3 seconds remaining to help seal a 103-97 win at Crypto.com Arena.
The Clippers beat their hallway rival for the eighth straight time despite their franchise player not checking into the game until the 6:25 mark in the second quarter and playing three stints that totaled 21 minutes.
